Search Files by Content on Mac and Windows

Find local documents, scans, and images by what they contain instead of exact filenames. AI Search is read-only for rename and move actions.

A safe way to search an unfamiliar folder

Filename search fails when the file is called scan_0042.pdf or IMG_7811.jpg. AI Search inspects supported file content and matches the meaning of your query across one folder or its subfolders.

Search results are intentionally separate from Rename and Organize. AI Search cannot rename or move a result into another folder. Reveal opens the file in Finder or Explorer, Exclude removes it from the current results, and Trash uses the operating system Trash or Recycle Bin.

  • Searches by meaning and content, not exact filename matches.

  • Scans a single folder or recurses into nested subfolders with live progress.

  • Does not rename or move results; you can reveal, exclude, or move matches to Trash.

  • With the Local provider selected, search runs on-device after the model is installed.

Best-fit use cases

  • Find an invoice, contract, or receipt without remembering its filename.
  • Locate scanned documents and photos by what is actually inside them.
  • Search for queries like “signed NDA”, “passport scan”, or “invoice from Amazon”.
  • Inspect a mixed archive without changing the names or locations of matching files.

How the workflow runs

  1. 1

Pick a folder and type what you are looking for.

  2. 2

The selected provider matches supported documents and images by content.

  3. 3

Reveal, exclude, or trash matches — searching never applies renames or folder moves.

AI Search FAQ

Questions about searching local files

Can AI Search rename or reorganize a matching file?

No. AI Search is read-only for rename and move actions. Open the Rename or Organize workspace when you want to change files.

Does search work offline?

Yes, when you use the Local provider after its one-time model download. Optional cloud providers require a network connection.

Which files can AI Search inspect?

The documented search examples cover supported images and documents. Unsupported files are skipped; check Supported Files for the current extension list.

Does moving a result to Trash bypass the operating system Trash?

No. RenameClick uses the operating system Trash or Recycle Bin so the action remains recoverable there.

How large a folder can AI Search scan?

AI Search uses the current Batch File Limit. It is 30,000 files by default and can be increased to 500,000 in Local AI Settings. If a folder exceeds the configured limit, raise it or choose a smaller folder before searching.
