Frequently Asked Questions
Got questions? We've got answers.
RenameClick is an offline-first AI tool that intelligently renames and organizes files based on their actual content. Designed for macOS and Windows, it helps keep real-world workflows tidy by transforming messy, meaningless file names into clear, descriptive ones - and automatically sorting files into the right folders.
By default, all processing happens locally on your computer using a built-in AI model. Files are not uploaded anywhere, ensuring privacy and full control over your data. For users who want more flexibility, RenameClick also supports optional cloud providers as well as local LLM integrations such as LM Studio and Ollama.
The app supports a wide range of file formats, including common image types like JPG, JPEG, PNG, and GIF, as well as documents such as PDF, DOC, and DOCX.
With batch processing, you can rename and organize hundreds of files in minutes. RenameClick analyzes each file's content and suggests meaningful names, which you can review and apply in a single click.
File Organizer. In addition to renaming, RenameClick can automatically categorize files and move them into folders using presets. By default, it includes two ready-to-use presets, but the real power comes from creating your own preset with categories that match your workflow. You define the category names and structure, and RenameClick sorts files accordingly.
RenameClick also supports multiple languages for generated file names, making it suitable for international and multilingual workflows.
For advanced use cases, RenameClick allows you to define custom AI instructions (custom prompts). This makes it possible to control naming behavior in detail, enforce your own naming conventions, extract specific fields like dates or amounts, and adapt file names and categorization to domain-specific workflows.
A dedicated GPU with 4GB VRAM is recommended for the best experience. Local LLMs run fastest on a GPU. If you use a CPU or have insufficient VRAM, RenameClick will use your system RAM, which is roughly 10-20x slower.
Yes. RenameClick is offline-first: local AI runs on your device and works without an internet connection. If you choose cloud providers (OpenAI or Google Gemini), those features require internet and your own API keys.
Drag and drop your files into RenameClick. The AI analyzes file content and suggests descriptive names. Review the suggestions and apply them with one click to batch rename hundreds of files.
Images: JPG, JPEG, PNG, GIF, WEBP, BMP, SVG, HEIC, HEIF, TIFF, TIF. Documents: PDF, DOC, DOCX, TXT, MD, CSV, RTF, ODT.
Yes! You can process unlimited files for free - AI generates names and categories for every file you drop. You get 30 credits per month to apply the changes (rename or move files). For unlimited apply actions, upgrade to Pro Monthly ($8/mo) or Pro Lifetime ($48 one-time).
File Organizer is a new feature that sorts your files into folders based on their content. Switch to the Organizer tab, select a category preset (like 'Documents' or 'Media Files'), drop your files, and the AI assigns each file to the best-matching category. Built-in presets include Documents (Invoices, Contracts, Reports) and Media Files (Photos, Screenshots, Artwork). You can create custom presets with up to 8 categories (or 20 with Local AI Settings).
Local AI Settings let you fine-tune the local AI engine to match your hardware. You can adjust: Context Size (token window, affects memory usage), Text Trim (max characters from documents), Custom Prompt Length (character limit for instructions), and Max Categories (expand from 8 to 20). A token calculator shows estimated usage for different scenarios. Access via the gear icon next to Local provider in Provider Settings.
RenameClick is available for macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel) and Windows. Download the version that matches your operating system from the official website.
RenameClick includes a ~4GB local AI model optimized for understanding file content. This model delivers the best balance of quality, speed, and system efficiency - providing accurate results without requiring internet access or cloud processing.
Yes. RenameClick can process and rename files containing text in various languages. However, English content produces the best results since the AI model is primarily trained on English data. Other languages may work with varying accuracy.
The built-in local LLM is filtered and won't generate names for adult content. However, you can connect to Ollama or LM Studio and use uncensored models if needed.
Yes! Just install the desktop app for your cloud storage (Google Drive, iCloud Drive, Dropbox, etc.) so you can browse and drag files from it. Web browser versions won't work - you need the native desktop apps.
Yes! RenameClick extracts EXIF metadata from photos and lets you use it in filename patterns. Use placeholders like $exif{date} for capture date, $exif{camera} for camera info, $exif{city} or $exif{country} for GPS location, and $exif{iso}, $exif{aperture}, $exif{shutter} for exposure settings. The built-in When_Where preset automatically creates names like 2024-06-15_Paris_France. You can view all available EXIF fields for each photo directly in the app.
